Helmshore Viaduct - East Lancashire Strategic Cycleway

New Search

Purpose As part of the East Lancashire Cycleway project, in the Helmshore area, the path to the north of Helmshore Viaduct has recently been resurfaced and the intention is to continue improving the route southwards across the viaduct towards Gregory Fold.

The current route across the viaduct is in poor condition and in periods of rain can get muddy with large pools of water making it difficult for people to use.

It is proposed to improve this route by surfacing the width of the viaduct above the arches to help prevent water damage to the structure, repair and repoint the parapets, and install new drainage pipes. The main greenway route will have a tarmac surface with the remaining surface dressing over the arches being buff coloured. This is similar to the treatment carried out recently on Lumb Viaduct near Irwell Vale. Please see the accompanying plans and images for further details of the proposed works.
